Nahh, it’s totally cool that you think a huge portion of the world doesn’t deserve rights. We should really stop “bitching and complaining” about this silly stuff!
How about this: if you don’t like chicken parmesan, I think you’re probably crazy or something because chicken parmesan is insanely delicious, but I respect your opinion. However, if you think that a large portion of the world’s population doesn’t deserve the same rights as everyone else because they happen to be attracted to the same sex, you’re a fucking asshole and your opinion doesn’t deserve my fucking respect.
I will respect your right to an opinion, but I decide whether or not I’m not going to respect your opinion.
Protip: If your opinion shits on other people, I am not going to respect your stupid fucking opinion.
Haha We take it too far?
Why should people respect others who don’t?
Relevant to my life.
I need to say this, cause it bugs me… having an opinion is everyone’s right. But not all opinions are as simple as strawberry vs. chocolate ice cream. When your opinions hurt others, you actually have to stand accountable. It is my right to have the opposite opinion and to tell you why you are misinformed and hurtful. I have a right to my feelings when you hurt me or harm the people I love. I am free to have the opinion that you are willfully ignorant or a jerk. There is a right and wrong and causing suffering is wrong. The first amendment does NOT mean that you get to say whatever you want without anyone responding negatively to you, if just means I can’t have you arrested or force you to be quiet. Grow up or get off the Internets.
And as tumblr fights back….
Maybe because we Tumblrers are sick to the teeth of bigoted, narrow-minded, head-too-far-up-one’s-own-arse opinions. Suppose the tables were reversed, you’d want your opinion to be heard loud and clear, wouldn’t you? Yeah, thought so. Put yourself in the opposition’s shoes and see what they’re fighting for before making judgements and accusations
I just can’t with this person. Way to just buttfuck logic, there, buddy. Do you say the same thing about racists? Should we respect their right to lynch people? How about rapists, the guys who are of the opinion that “She wanted it”?
I just don’t even…
They are totally open to have their opinion…But this? This is the thing.
I want to discuss it. I want to know why they think a large bit of the population doesn’t deserve rights, I want to know why they think I don’t deserve rights, I want to know why they don’t apparently count me as a citizen who deserves the same basic respect and decency and rights as a heterosexual.
I’ve yet to meet anyone who can back up their opinion with anything but ignorance and stubbornness.
For me, it is a personal thing. I respect that they have an opinion - It’s an opinion I find to be based on totally incorrect/cruelly biased/religious information and ignorance, but it is their opinion. But I don’t respect that opinion, mainly because it’s a hateful opinion that is directly against people such as myself.
When someone tells me that I should never be able to marry the girl I love, I’m not going to respect it. When someone tells me that I shouldn’t be allowed in the hospital room of my girlfriend, I’m not going to respect it. When someone tells me that because a religious book (including but not limited to The Bible) doesn’t say it’s okay, my existence isn’t okay, I’m not going to respect it. When someone tells me I shouldn’t be allowed around children because of my orientation (that I can’t change, nor do I ever want to), when someone tells me that I should be killed for being an “abomination”, when someone states that they are of the opinion that I’m going to Hell because I happen to be gay, when someone says that they aren’t comfortable with my presence because I’m “different” in a way that isn’t actually physically noticeable or really relevant, I’m not going to respect their opinion.
Call me a hypocritical, whiny bitch. That’s fine. But I don’t bitch and whine about how I want my opinions to be respected; I bitch and whine about how I don’t get the same rights as other citizens for something that I can’t change. I bitch and whine because I don’t get the same respect and rights as someone else because of who I happen to love. That’s not my opinion. That’s me, wondering why people think my existence doesn’t count. That’s me saying “I exist, let my existence get the rights it should already have!”
If that makes me a whiny, hypocritical bitch…I’m strangely okay with that.
…I wanted to add something, but it’d just look lame next to all these awesome quasi-essays. So yeah.
lol okay guys, can we all calm down for a second? Including the OP, whoever that is? First of all, chicken parmesan has NOTHING to do with anyone’s rights. Second, having an opinion is not lynching someone. Having an opinion is not taking action. I’m not agreeing with the original statement, but I will say this: I believe that people have the right to their opinions. This isn’t some Orwellian, 1984-style culture we live and blog in. Just because someone disagrees with you doesn’t make either of you wrong or right, necessarily. But what becomes a real problem is when people force their opinions on others. Let’s have a little metaphor, shall we?
I love bacon. Oh my baby Jesus in a manger, I frickin love bacon. I could not, in a million years, be able to become a vegetarian. And yet, I am not going to go up to a vegetarian and tell them their ethics are stupid and that they should grow up and eat meat already because animals were put on earth to be food and that’s the circle of life.
Vice versa, I don’t think there’s many vegetarians or vegans out there who would go around knocking on doors and handing out pamphlets and walking up and down the street with angry protestation signs, shouting that all the meat-eaters of the world are to be condemned because they don’t see a problem with demolishing a roast turkey every once in a while.
The vegetarians/vegans and meat-eating-people (aren’t I politically correct) of the world have, by and large, made their peace with each other. Because they accept that other people have different ideas/ethics/morals, and are content to leave them alone if they’re afforded the same respect.
Therein lies the problem of LGBT rights, at least as I see them in my country. America, for better or worse, has a government originally rooted in a lot of Christian morals and Biblical concepts. Problem number one: basing a Constitution on a centuries-old document that shouldn’t always be taken literally OR word-for-word is a dangerous thing to do. People change, cultures evolve, the morals and ethics of the era are always shifting. Problem number two: the people who think being LGBT etc. is wrong often try and force their ideas down other people’s throats, or at least take a vocal stance against it. They’ve decided that their moral code is the only right one, and that everyone should follow it.
Sorry, no thank you. Humanity is so diverse and ever-changing that having one single strict moral code is virtually impossible. No one will ever agree on one thing to the point where there will never be distress over it. Why can’t we accept that there are differing opinions, and as long as no one is actively or verbally infringing on other people’s rights, stop taking offense at it?
I’m a Christian, and one of a very small set that support LGBT rights. I’m straight, sure, but that doesn’t mean I don’t want to be active in trying to change anti-gay attitudes and laws. It’s a fine line between getting angry at someone’s beliefs, which is in their own mind and their own secret place of self - their own mind palace, if you will - and which everyone ought to be able to retreat to and keep to themselves, and respecting other people’s opinions without actively seeking to destroy the rights of others
This isn’t very coherent, I’m sorry. I could write for ages about this topic and these issues, but I won’t. Hopefully I won’t offend anyone. It’s just that there are so many people brought up in a certain way of life, and a certain mindset, who we have to be patient with, because they don’t understand. They literally can’t see the other side, and shouting back across the fence at them won’t fix anything.
